  1. What are you looking for in a D.J.? Before you hire any D.J., determine what you want. Do you want the D.J. to keep the reception moving or do you want a D.J. that only plays music with limited interaction.  Most couples want a D.J. who can M.C. the reception and keep everything flowing.

  2. Meet with the D.J.! It’s important to meet with the D.J. because you have to feel comfortable with that person. The D.J. will be your spokesperson at your reception.  Listen to what the D.J. explains about he or she can do. Does it match your requirements? Don’t hire someone who clashes with your personality.

  3. Check References.... Find out what other brides and grooms thought about the D.J. Talk to a couple from a recent weddings. Don’t rely on the printed statements, many of these statements are fabricated stories.

  4. Experience with Wedding Receptions? If you’re like me, you don’t want to be a guinea pig. Make sure your D.J. has entertained at wedding receptions.  You normally can tell during the initial conversation with the D.J.

  5. What’s your budget? Just like anything, Disc Jockey’s offer varying rates.  Determine a budget that fits into your plans.  Don’t skimp on your budget for the D.J..  Be careful of a common problem - the budget bride syndrome - If your cake cost more than your D.J., you’re putting the success of your reception on the brink of disaster.  Your guest won’t remember a bad cake but they will remember a bad D.J. because you wanted the Cheapest Disc Jockey!

  6. Planning and Details. You want a Disc Jockey who will help you with all of the details of the reception.  During your reception, you shouldn’t  have to worry about anything.  A professional D.J. will have a detailed itinerary for the reception and have notified all of the other vendors at your reception of what’s going to take place.  Your D.J. will keep you, your guest, the site mgr, and anyone else involved with the reception on what’s taking place. Many D.J.’s have On-Line Planning and Music Library available to help you.

  7. Check the Contract - Make sure everything is spelled out in the D.J.’s contract - Date, time, location, price, and who the D.J. will be.  Be careful of the “bait and switch” that some of the multi-system D.J. companies have pulled the switch and bait on clients by meeting with them but sending another D.J. they’ve never met.
